Medusa, in Greek "protector, guardian" is one of the three Gorgons of Greek mythology.
According to some authors of the past, Medusa was a beautiful woman transformed into a monster by the Goddess Athena.
She had the power to petrify anyone who crossed her gaze.
Later she was beheaded by Perseus who took her head with him to Africa where he used it against the Titan Atlas turning him into stone and giving rise to today's Atlas mountain range in North Africa.
